Human hair follicles normally run through cycles of activity, when they produce hair fiber and dormancy, when no fiber is made. Telogen is the stage in the cycle when a hair follicle is resting. The term “telogen effluvium” describes hair follicles that are entering dormant stage and shedding hair. In a normal, healthy individual, up to 90% of hair follicles are in a growing (anagen) phase, while 10% are in the telogen phase at any one moment. If the percentage of hair follicles in the telogen phase increases significantly, there will be an increase in hair loss. This may be brought on by diet deficiencies, hormonal changes or extreme physical or emotional stress.

Before rushing to try over-the-counter remedies for thinning hair, visit your dermatologist to rule out underlying medical causes for hair loss. Your dermatologist treats more than skin – your dermatologist is the medical professional to see about disorders affecting hair and nails, too.

P.S. Dermatologists receive extensive training in the diagnosis and treatment of telogen effluvium.

Dermabrasion

Dermabrasion is a technique whereby the dermatologist mechanically “sands” the skin to improve the contour and achieve a rejuvenated appearance, as a new layer of remodeled skin replaces the damaged skin. Dermabrasion was first used predominantly to improve acne scars, chicken pox marks and scars resulting from accident or disease. Today, it is used to treat other skin conditions, such as wrinkles, sun damage and certain types of skin lesions. The procedure begins with cleansing the area to be treated with an antiseptic agent, then freezing the skin with an anesthetic. Next, the dermatologist uses a high-speed rotary instrument with an abrasive wheel to remove upper layers of skin and improve irregularities. Healing occurs within 7-10 days. Dermabrasion, however is just one tool your dermatologist has to help with the rejuvenation of sun damaged skin. If your skin’s appearance isn’t what it could be, consult with your dermatologist about your treatment options.

P.S. The pink appearance of the skin associated with dermabrasion largely fades by 8-12 weeks after the procedure.
