Can Botox Prevent Migraines?
May 19, 2010
Botulinum toxin A (Botox), which is already regarded as a highly effective means of temporarily erasing wrinkles, may also help prevent some types of migraines. According to a recent small study, Botox may help reduce the recurrence of the crushing, eye-popping headaches known as “ocular” migraines. However, botulinum toxin A injections did not seem to exert any effect on migraines that are experienced as pressure building inside the head. The migraine-reducing effect was experienced by patients receiving Botox for cosmetic reasons who also suffered from migraines. Within three months after the Botox treatments, patients with imploding (ocular) migraines saw their experience of the headaches slashed from almost seven days per month to less than one day a month.
P.S. Botox may prevent ocular migraines by blocking pain receptors or reducing inflammation.
Raising Sunburn Awareness
May 12, 2010
When beach goers hit beaches with rough surf, they often hear lifeguards issue warnings over loudspeakers to tell them to exercise extra caution. In Australia, health officials have taken beach safety one step further by playing jingles that remind beach goers to apply sunscreen. This novel approach by the Cancer Council of New South Wales indicates the degree to which this nation takes the threat posed by sun exposure seriously. Australia has the highest incidence of skin cancer in the world, and its population has been losing the battle against skin cancer in recent years. This has led the country to adopt the five-second musical song that is being played at beaches to remind people to stop tanning and wear skin protection.
P.S. The sun damage sustained in the first 15 years of life greatly increases the risk of skin cancer later in life.
