Plumb it Up!
June 29, 2010
Injection skin fillers enable dermatologists to eradicate or reduce facial wrinkles without surgery or any recuperative downtime. Perhaps the most common wrinkle filler is collagen, a natural protein found in the human body, which has been used since 1976. While purified forms of bovine collagen may cause allergic reactions in some patients (requiring a pre-treatment skin test), newer forms of injection collagen derived from humans (such as Cosmoderm™ and Cosmoplast™) reduce the potential for allergic reaction. Other injection fillers (such as Hylaform®, Juvedérm®, Perlane, and Restylane®), utilize various forms of hyaluronic acid, a natural moisturizer that attracts and binds with water, providing support and lubrication for wrinkled skin. These and other injection fillers plump up wrinkles and smooth skin.
P.S. One injectable skin filler contains microspheres composed of naturally occurring calcium and phosphate ions, which stimulate the formation of thin tissue to fill in wrinkles and provide a semi-permanent support structure for the skin.
