Hitting the Nail Head-on

October 26, 2010

Although not life-threatening, onychomycosis, the fungal infection affecting the toenails and fingernails, often poses a stubborn problem for those with the condition. The infection is also deemed to be particularly unsightly by the large segment of the population that values the good looks of manicures and pedicures. Onychomycosis can also cause pain, discomfort, and disfigurement that may pose serious physical and occupational limitations that can adversely affect sufferers’ quality of life. In light of all the harm that onychomycosis can bring, it should come as welcome news that the dermatologist can prescribe a once-daily treatment that can help effectively clear up the infection. One 200-mg tablet of the oral antifungal itraconazole is far more effective than topical treatments.

P.S. Onychomycosis affects males more commonly than females, and adults are 30 times more likely to have onychomycosis than children.

Are Sunscreens Safe?

October 18, 2010

The recent controversy surrounding the safety of sunscreens started with the Environmental Working Group (EWG), which began its annual sunscreen safety reports in 2007, asking the U.S. Food and Drug Administration to complete its review of data concerning the safety of retinyl palmitate. It is the EWG’s contention that the derivative of vitamin A, which is added to many sunscreens, increases the risk of skin cancer. The EWG also has questions about oxybenzone (benzophenone-3), another ingredient found in sunscreens, which the EWG claims is a hormone disruptor. Most dermatologists maintain that the allegations, which stem from studies of lab animals, are questionable. The bottom line is that sunscreens protect skin from harmful UV rays and evidence of a harmful effect is unsubstantiated.

P.S. Sunscreens should not be a person’s primary defense against sun exposure. It is more important to cover up with hats and clothing.
